What Is Ischemic Heart Disease?

Ischemic heart disease (IHD), also called as coronary heart disease or coronary artery disease (CAD), occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood. The most common reason is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. This usually develops because of fatty acid deposits and cholesterol-containing plaques accumulate inside artery walls [1,2].

When blood flow is partially reduced, a person may experience angina, typically described as chest pressure or discomfort during physical activity or emotional stress. A sudden and complete blockage can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
