Zinc plays an important role in regulating inflammatory pathways by influencing immune signaling molecules and antioxidant defenses. Scientific studies indicate that zinc helps suppress activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), a key regulator of inflammatory responses.

Additionally, zinc is a structural component of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the body’s major antioxidant enzymes that protects cells from oxidative damage.

A systematic review found that zinc supplementation reduced circulating inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly in older adults and individuals with chronic diseases (4). The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 40 mg/day of elemental zinc unless medically supervised.
