Magnesium citrate is a magnesium salt formed by combining magnesium with citric acid. It is widely used as a magnesium supplement and is also used in certain products intended to relieve occasional constipation. Magnesium citrate is considered a relatively well-absorbed form of supplemental magnesium. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that magnesium citrate, along with magnesium aspartate, lactate and chloride, is generally more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate (1).

One of the best-established practical uses of magnesium citrate is supporting bowel regularity and relieving occasional constipation. Magnesium citrate has an osmotic effect in the gastrointestinal tract, meaning that it can increase water in the intestinal contents. This helps soften stool and may make bowel movements easier.

Magnesium-containing preparations are recognized for their laxative effects, and magnesium is used as an active ingredient in several laxative products (1).

However, magnesium citrate should not automatically be used as a long-term daily laxative. Excessive supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. The risk of adverse effects increases as supplemental magnesium intake increases (1).

For this reason, people using magnesium citrate specifically for constipation should follow the product directions and avoid repeatedly using high doses without professional guidance.

The authors concluded that better-designed clinical trials are required to establish a clear relationship between magnesium supplementation and sleep health (2).

A separate systematic review and meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials involving 151 older adults found that magnesium supplementation was associated with a reduction in sleep-onset latency of approximately 17 minutes. However, the researchers rated the available evidence as low to very low quality because of methodological limitations and risk of bias (3).

Therefore, magnesium citrate may contribute to nutritional adequacy and relaxation in some individuals, but it should not be presented as a clinically proven treatment for chronic insomnia.

Magnesium is important for maintaining normal bone structure and metabolism. It participates in processes involving calcium and vitamin D metabolism and is required for numerous biochemical reactions involved in cellular energy production (1).

Importantly, supplement labels generally declare the amount of elemental magnesium, rather than the total weight of the magnesium compound. Therefore, consumers should compare products based on elemental magnesium rather than the total weight of magnesium citrate (1).

Recommended Dosage: USA, EU and India

Recommended magnesium intake differs between countries and should not be confused with the recommended dose of magnesium citrate as a supplement.

In the United States, the NIH recommends 420 mg/day of total magnesium for adult, depending on age. This upper limit does not include magnesium naturally present in food (1).

In the European Union, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has established a 370mg/day upper level for supplemental magnesium from readily dissociable magnesium salts and certain magnesium compounds in food supplements. This value applies to supplemental magnesium rather than naturally occurring magnesium in foods (4).

For India, the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommendations specify 440 mg/day for adult men and 370 mg/day for adult women as the recommended dietary allowance for magnesium (5).

These figures represent total dietary magnesium requirements, not a recommended magnesium citrate supplement dose. The appropriate supplement dose depends on the elemental magnesium content, diet, health status, age and purpose of supplementation.

Best Time to Take Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium citrate can generally be taken with food if it causes gastrointestinal discomfort when taken on an empty stomach. For constipation, timing should follow the specific product’s directions because the desired bowel response varies between preparations. For nutritional supplementation, consistency is more important than a specific time of day. There is currently insufficient evidence to establish a universally superior time for taking magnesium citrate for sleep.

Precautions

Excessive supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping, while extremely high magnesium levels can become dangerous, particularly in people with impaired kidney function. Magnesium can also interact with certain medicines, including some antibiotics and bisphosphonates, by reducing their absorption. Therefore, appropriate separation between magnesium supplements and certain medications may be necessary (1).

People with kidney disease or those taking regular prescription medicines should consult a healthcare professional before using higher-dose magnesium supplements.
